Katherine Whitton Baker was born on June 8, 1950, in Midland, Texas, US to Seawand Baker and Helene Andree (née Whitton). Her father was a geologist and educator..

She studied at the Mills High School in Millbrae, California and completed her graduation in 1968. She was quite influenced by her drama instructor Allen Knight that led her to develop interest in pursuing an acting career.
